Credit Counseling Certification
Under the new bankruptcy law there is a requirement that bankruptcy applicants obtain a Certificate of pre-filing counseling provided through an approved Credit Counseling Service, which administers the
25 to 90 minute financial course.
After you complete course the The Credit Counseling Service online, by
telephone, or in person, the service will provide you a Certificate of Credit Counseling. The law requires you provide
your bankruptcy attorney such certificate prior to the date your case is
filed (not prior to the time we first meet.)
Currently we are recommending CRICKET
CREDIT COUNSELING as
a quick and convenient way to obtain the certificate - within 24 hours, through online counseling. You
will need my "FIRM
CODE." It is: 219156.
You will have to pay for the Certificate on your own and the costs run
about $36 for individual or married couple. There is no requirement that you see your attorney first prior to the time you obtain the Certificate. If
you go through the CRICKET website, and use the firm code of 219156,
Cricket will email me your Certificate of Credit Counseling once you have
completed the procedure. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes. I
RECOMMEND YOU SEE A BANKRUPTCY ATTORNEY FIRST, THOUGH, BEFORE SPENDING
THE TIME & MONEY NECESSARY TO GET THIS CERTIFICATE. YOU'LL HAVE
NO NEED TO GET IT, IF YOU DO NOT QUALIFY FOR BANKRUPTCY.
A 2nd Certificate (of "A Certificate of Financial
Management") will be required a few months after you have filed your
bankruptcy. To obtain this 2nd required certificate, I recommend you go
to the same site or service as you did for the 1st certificate, and again
I recommend Cricket
only because they will email me directly your Certificate when you have
completed the procedure. Like the first time, there will be a charge, generally
$24, for individual or married couple.
